Ongoing survey and removal of unexploded explosive ordnance at DND Mary Hill Training Area alongside Galloping Goose taking place until early 2026.

The following alert has been posted at the request of DND Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt Public Affairs:

Unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) contractors will be visible from the Galloping Goose Regional Trail conducting surveys and remediation of UXOs -- military explosives that did not explode or function as intended --– at DND Mary Hill Training Area in Metchosin. Work is not anticipated to significantly impact trail users but the public should be aware that contractors with vehicles and equipment will be stationed along the trail.

The public is reminded to remain on the Galloping Goose Trail as there is no safe time to access the Mary Hill Training Area and trespassing is against the law and dangerous. The UXOs that remain onsite present a serious safety risk and unauthorized access causes significant disruption to contractors working in the area.

Only trained professionals can determine if a munition item is dangerous or not; any unknown object could be UXO and should not be touched or investigated. If you see something that looks like it may be UXO:

  • Don’t touch it;
  • Turn around and leave the area;
  • Call 911 or local police.
