Fire Protection Services

The Capital Regional District (CRD) provides fire protection services in many Electoral Area communities through a network of commissions, societies, and service contracts. Most fire department members are volunteers from within the communities they serve.

Juan de Fuca Fire Protection

Volunteer fire departments provide fire protection services in the areas indicated below. CRD Regional Parks and the Regional Water Supply Departments provide fire protection and services in these regions. Search and Rescue organizations coordinate with the fire departments to provide emergency services on roads and in wilderness areas.

Salt Spring Island Fire Protection

he CRD provides fire protection services in many Electoral Area communities through a network of commissions, societies, and service contracts. Most fire department members are volunteers from within the communities they serve.

Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue oversees fire regulations, response, and permits for most of Salt Spring Island and is operated by Salt Spring Island Fire Protection Improvement District.

Southern Gulf Islands Fire Protection

The Fire Departments on the Southern Gulf Islands are primarily run by volunteers. They may operate as a CRD service, under contract with the CRD, given financial contributions from the CRD, or may be operated by an Improvement District.

Municipal Fire Protection

Municipalities are responsible for provision of fire protection through their local fire departments.

CRD Fire Dispatch

Saanich Fire provides emergency fire dispatch on behalf of the CRD for Juan de Fuca, Salt Spring Island, Southern Gulf Islands, Metchosin, Sooke, and Highlands. The service operates from a purpose-built, secure, post-disaster facility at Saanich Fire's Station No. 1 on Vernon Avenue.
