Commercial Customers

Commercial customers at Hartland include:

  • Waste collectors and haulers
  • Municipalities and local governments
  • Businesses and institutions

Site Access

Commercial vehicle access depends on what type of material is being dropped off as well as the type of vehicle. All loads must remain covered and secured until reaching the site.

Self-tipping vehicles must use this entrance to access the Active Face and the Kitchen Scraps Transfer Station. Accepted materials include:

  • Kitchen scraps
  • General refuse
  • Clean demo (no banned materials)

Main Entrance (1 Hartland Ave)

Fixed bed or self-tipping vehicles must use this entrance to access the Material Division Transfer Station or the Public Drop-off Depot. Accepted materials include:

  • Wood (clean and treated)
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Controlled waste
  • Recycling (vehicles under 5,550 GVW only)

Accepted payments

Cash, debit, Visa, MasterCard and cheque are acceptable payment methods. Commercial customers can also register to become a Hartland account customer to charge tipping fees to a credit account.

Hartland Account Customers

Commercial customers can apply to be a registered Hartland account customer to have access to the following services:

  • Ability to charge tipping fees to a credit account
  • Access cards for truck identification/automated scaling
  • Early entry to site (through auto scale 7-9am, Monday to Friday)
  • Access to the Waste Stream Collector Incentive Program (2025)

Public and Automated Weigh Scales

The public scale serves both residential customers and commercial customers with or without credit accounts.

Use of the automated weigh scale requires both a credit account and an RFID sticker. The automated scale reduces wait times and provides early entry to the active face and kitchen scraps transfer station.

Active Face

The active face is the area of the landfill where garbage is received directly from self-tipping commercial vehicles.

The active face is unpaved, can be uneven and at times get quite muddy. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle is suitable for the conditions of the active face. Drivers are required to wash down their vehicle tires upon exiting the active face during wet weather conditions. The wheel wash facility should not be used to wash out vehicle boxes.

Due to the presence of mobile equipment moving and compacting garbage, all customers to the active face and wheel wash facility must wear high visibility vests and safety boots. The exception are passengers who remain in the vehicle.

All loads must remain covered and secured until reaching the site.

Disposal Permits and Appointments

To protect the health and safety of all workers as well as the environment, some materials streams are managed separate from general refuse and require approval and in some cases an appointment for disposal at Hartland Landfill.

Construction, Renovation and Demolition Material

Disposal of material associated with renovation activity requires pre-approval and an appointment for large loads destined for the active face. Visit our Reno & Demo Waste webpage to learn what materials are included, exempt and to access the application forms.

Asbestos Containing Material

Material containing any concentration of asbestos requires an appointment and laboratory analysis for disposal at Hartland Landfill. Visit our Asbestos webpage to see what items commonly contain asbestos, learn about the requirements for disposal and to access WorksafeBC resources.

Controlled Waste

To find examples of what items are considered controlled wastes and to access the application forms, visit our Controlled Waste Disposal webpage.
