Regional Trails

The Capital Regional District (CRD) protects and manages four regional trails on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, which provide outdoor experiences and activities that are vital to the region. The regional trails support active transportation and recreation, the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors, and work toward action on climate change, all while offering social connections and improving quality of life.

The E&N Rail Trail, Galloping Goose Regional Trail, Lochside Regional Trail, and Mayne Island Regional Trails are multi-use corridors used for both recreation and active transportation. All who safely walk, pedal and roll are welcome. We all belong here.

Trail Visitation Trends

The regional trails in the capital region saw 4.4 million visits in 2025. That’s an increase of 7.2% from 2024. With that growth it’s important for everyone's enjoyment that we all safety Share The Trail, which creates a more enjoyable trail system for everyone.

Share The Trail: Regional Trail Safety and Etiquette

Here’s how you can safely Share The Trail

  • Be informed: Learn and understand trail rules, traffic signage, and signs, while keeping up to date on the latest safety regulation (e.g., helmets are required, and you must be 16+ to ride an e-scooter or a standard e-bike, or 14+ to ride a light e-bike).
  • Be alert: Be aware of your surroundings, watch out for other trail users, and make eye contact with others. Listening to music or using your phone is a dangerous distraction that can make it hard to notice approaching traffic when you are walking or rolling.
  • Be visible: Wear light, bright and reflective materials and add lights or reflectors to your gear. Where possible, stay on the pathways so you can see approaching trail users.
  • Be predictable: Communicate your intentions to fellow trail users by using your voice, hand signals, eye contact, or use lights and bells.
  • Be courteous: Safely share the trails and follow posted signage, keep to the right, yield to others, mind your speed, alert others before passing, keep pets on leash (scoop poop), and respect the environment. Show mutual respect to fellow trail users and be kind.
