Magic Lake Wastewater Treatment

Magic Lake Estates sewer service provides local sewage collection and treatment for approximately 718 residential properties within the Magic Lake Estates Sewer Service Area on North Pender Island.  Wastewater is conveyed to Schooner Wastewater Treatment Plant through 7 pump stations and over 16 km of sewer pipe.  Schooner Wastewater Treatment Plant treats the wastewater to a high effluent quality using membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology followed by ultraviolet disinfection prior to discharge out a long outfall into Swanson Channel.  The residual solids that are extracted from the treatment process are sent to a solid waste facility for further processing.

Authority

The Capital Regional District (CRD) Board was requested through a referendum in 1980 to establish a specified area for the purpose of establishing a sewage collection and disposal system. The service is now authorized and administered under local service Bylaw 1873.

Administration

The Magic Lake Estates Water and Sewer Committee provides community input for the delivery of sewage treatment services. This service is managed and operated by the CRD Integrated Water Services Department.
