Cedar Lane

About the System

The Cedar Lane Water System is located on the north east side of Salt Spring Island and provides drinking water to approximately 37 service connections.

CRD's Infrastructure & Water Services is responsible for the overall operation of the water system. The design and construction of water system facilities are overseen by CRD's Infrastructure Engineering & Planning division. A contractor conducts the day-to-day operations and maintenance. The quality of drinking water provided to customers in the Cedar Lane Water System is overseen by CRD's Water Quality division.

NOTE: Annual Reports are available late June for the previous year.

Cedar Lane Manganese Treatment Project – Petition Process

The petition from property owners in the Cedar Lane Water Service to authorize borrowing to upgrade the Cedar Lane Water System Manganese Removal has passed. The petition requests that the CRD move forward with securing funding of up to $230,000 over a maximum term of 15 years for the proposed projects in the capital plan.  The next steps will be to introduce the loan authorization bylaw to the Electoral Areas Committee to recommend to the CRD Board that the bylaw be given three readings and be forwarded to the Inspector of Municipalities for review and approval along with the petition results. Once funding has been released, the project can move forward.

Source Water

The Cedar Lane Water System obtains its drinking water from two deep wells: Well #1 and Well #5. Well #5 is the primary source of water for the water system.

Water Treatment Process

The water treatment process consists of coarse filtration, ultra violet light (UVA) disinfection and chlorine (liquid sodium hypochlorite) disinfection.

Distribution System

Treated water is pumped to the Cedar lane tank and distributed to customers through a 1,500 metre network of 150mm (6”), 100mm (4“) and 50mm (2”) water mains. The distribution system also contains hydrants and standpipes. Service connections are provided to the property line with curb stops and individual household meters. Service from the property line to the dwelling is the homeowners’ responsibility.

Emergency Notifications

Register for the Public Alert Notification System to receive drinking water related notifications such as boil water advisories. This system is also used to notify Electoral Area residents in the event of a disaster or emergency such as earthquakes, tsunami warnings, or hazardous spills.
