Ganges Harbour Wastewater Treatment

Ganges sewer service provides local sewage collection and treatment for the community of Ganges on Salt Spring Island. The service's treatment plant produces treated liquid effluent and sludge. The liquid effluent is dispersed into the ocean by an outfall; the sludge is sent to the Salt Spring Island liquid waste disposal facility for further processing.

Authority

In 1978 preliminary work on sewage collection and disposal commenced and in 1985 the CRD assumed responsibility for construction and provision of sewage collection, treatment, and disposal in the Ganges Sewer Area. The service is authorized and administered under Bylaw 1923.

Administration

The Ganges Sewer Local Services Commission provides community input for the delivery of sewage collection and wastewater treatment.  This service is managed and operated by the CRD Integrated Water Services Department.

Funding

The budget for this service is formalized through an annual CRD Financial Plan and is funded by tax requisition, and by user fees and connection charges.
