The Saanich Peninsula wastewater treatment plant is a secondary treatment plant with the capability to produce Class A biosolids for beneficial use.
The plant commenced operation in 2000, replacing three individual CRD sewage treatment plants that were constructed in early 1970’s.
In 2011, the Saanich Peninsula wastewater treatment plant heat recovery system was commissioned. The system recovers thermal energy from the treatment plant effluent and supplies hot water to heat the Panorama Recreation Centre pool. The system displaces the need for natural gas to heat the pool, thus significantly reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from Panorama Recreation Centre.
Authority
In 1996 a local service for sewage treatment was established and is authorized and administered under Bylaw 2388.
Administration
The Saanich Peninsula Wastewater Commission provides community input for the delivery of sewage collection and wastewater treatment. This service is managed and operated by the CRD Infrastructure & Water Services department.
Boundary
The Districts of North and Central Saanich, the Town of Sidney, the Airport Authority and the Tseycum and Pauquachin First Nation make up the boundary for the service as outlined on the following Service Area Maps:
Funding
The Saanich Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant budget is formalized through an annual CRD Financial Plan and is funded by Tax Requisition on behalf of the residents in the Service Area.
