Residents are advised to avoid entering the waters along the affected shoreline.

A process upset at the Ganges Wastewater Treatment Plant on Salt Spring Island on April 13, 2026 caused a tank to overflow with wastewater foam which entered the Ganges Creek located beside the wastewater treatment plant. Ganges Creek drains into the nearby Ganges Harbour.

Crews are completing clean-up, have placed warning signs, and cordoned off the affected area including a section of the path located immediately north of the facility adjacent to Ganges Creek. The affected shoreline is approximately 80 metres southwest of Centennial Park.

As a result of this discharge, residents are advised to avoid entering the waters along the affected shoreline, as the effect from the wastewater foam may pose a health risk.

As a precaution and in consultation with Island Health, beaches within the affected areas will be posted with public health advisory signs until sample results indicate that the affected area no longer poses a health risk.
