The Capital Regional District (CRD) has obtained regulatory permission for a 13-day sewage bypass of secondary treatment while completing system maintenance on the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. This activity will result in effluent which has undergone primary treatment to exit the 2 km long outfall into the Salish Sea (Straight of Juan de Fuca), and is planned to start on May 22, 2026.
A sewage bypass is a temporary diversion of wastewater or sewage flow to allow for maintenance or upgrades. The CRD will notify the public through our website while the bypass is occurring. For more info, visit Core Area Wastewater Treatment.
