System Maintenance – Schooner Way Wastewater Treatment Plant, Pender Island

Planned maintenance in January 2026 will result in a sewage bypass of the full treatment plant.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) is obtaining regulatory permission for an 8-day sewage bypass of all treatment processes while completing system maintenance on the Schooner Way Wastewater Treatment Plant on Pender Island. This activity will result in effluent which is effectively untreated to exit the 198 m long outfall into the Salish Sea (Swanson Channel), and is planned to start mid-January,  2026.  

A sewage bypass is a temporary diversion of wastewater or sewage flow to allow for maintenance or upgrades. The CRD will notify the public through our website while the bypass is occurring. For more information, visit Magic Lake Wastewater Treatment.
