Random samples of garbage, recycling and organics will be collected from households as part of the CRD's Solid Waste Generator Study.

The CRD is conducting a region-wide study to better understand what is in our garbage, recycling and organic waste to help improve waste programs and services.

Sampling will take place between June and October and is coordinated with regular collection days. Residents may notice a different collection truck or a change in collection timing. Tetra Tech is carrying out the collection and sorting work on behalf of the CRD.

Random, unidentifiable waste samples will be collected from single-family homes, multi-family dwellings, businesses, schools and recreation centres. Residents will not be notified before sampling so the study reflects normal disposal habits and provides an accurate picture of how current programs are performing.

Protecting privacy is very important. No personal information is collected and anything that is unintentionally gathered is immediately and securely disposed of. Waste is collected from multiple households or sites and combined, so it cannot be linked back to any individual home or business.

The study focuses on the types of materials being disposed of, not on enforcement or checking compliance with regulations. The results will help the CRD identify opportunities to improve waste reduction, recycling and organics programs across the region.
