Get Ready for the British Columbia ShakeOut

This week, the Capital Regional District (CRD) encourages residents to prepare for potential earthquakes and tsunamis. British Columbia is Canada’s most seismically active region, experiencing thousands of minor earthquakes each year.

Being prepared can help you avoid injury, reduce damage to your home, and remain self-sufficient for at least seven days without outside help.

The most important thing to remember during an earthquake:

  • DROP to the ground
  • TAKE COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, or against a wall with your arms covering your head/neck
  • HOLD ON to your shelter and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops

Mark your calendar: The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is October 16, 2025, at 10:16 a.m. Join millions of people around the world and practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” during this year’s earthquake drill.
