CRD releases 2024 Greenhouse Gas Inventory

Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) has released its regional and local government Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories for 2024. Produced every two years as a resource for each of the municipalities and electoral areas within the capital region, the latest report shows continued progress toward regional GHG targets and significant reductions in regional GHG emissions since 2007. Transportation and buildings remain the largest sources of GHG emissions and a priority for action to reduce pollution in the capital region.

Key findings from the report include:

  • In 2024, the capital region emitted approximately 1.8 million tonnes of C02 emissions annually.
  • GHG emissions are down 11% compared to the 2007 baseline and down 1% since 2022.
  • Progress on climate action is occurring alongside strong population growth, with per-capita emissions now 30% below 2007 levels.
  • Transportation and buildings continue to account for the vast majority of regional emissions (approximately 71%).
  • Natural Gas use accounted for the majority of the building-related GHG emissions in the region.

“Achieving the CRD’s Regional Growth Strategy GHG targets demands sustained investment and bold policy shifts at every level, including local, provincial, national, and global. With transportation and buildings accounting for 71% of regional emissions in 2024, accelerating the transition to zero-emission transportation, continuing heat pump adoption, and reducing natural gas use are essential,” said CRD Board Chair, Cliff McNeil-Smith. “The CRD will continue working with local governments and the community to advance initiatives that meet our ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals.”

The CRD delivers regional, sub-regional and local services to 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Governed by a 24-member Board of Directors, the CRD works collaboratively with First Nations and government partners to enable sustainable growth, foster community well-being, and develop cost-effective infrastructure while continuing to provide core services to residents throughout the region.
