April 22, 2026, marks Earth Day, an annual recognition of the global environmental movement that began 56 years ago. What started as a grassroots effort has grown into a powerful force for change, inspiring landmark environmental protections that continue to guide how we care for our planet today. That legacy endures, calling for ongoing collaboration, innovation, and commitment to addressing climate change and advancing a more sustainable future.
This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the important role that individuals, organizations, and communities play in sustaining environmental protections. Environmental progress is achieved through consistent, everyday actions. Clean air, safe water, and climate resilience are essential to the well-being of our communities. Individual contributions, when combined, can have a meaningful and lasting impact.
Residents across the capital region are encouraged to participate in local initiatives that support environmental sustainability, waste reduction, and ecosystem protection. Opportunities to get involved include:
- City Nature Challenge
Help document local biodiversity, contributing to a global conservation effort while increasing awareness of the region’s natural environment. - Rethink Waste Community Grant
Come up with a sustainable idea that can benefit the community! This program provides up to $5,000 in funding to support innovative, community-led projects that aim to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices, helping extend the life of the Hartland Landfill. - Restoration Volunteers Program
Spend your time with other volunteers to assist in the removal of invasive species to help protect and restore native ecosystems throughout the region. - Hartland Landfill & Recycling Facility Tours
Sign up alone or with friends and family to see where your garbage goes. These educational tours offer residents the opportunity to learn how waste is managed in the region, explore the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling, and better understand the impact of everyday behaviours. - Cool It! Climate Leadership Training Programs
Learn more about existing programs and initiatives. In partnership with the BC Sustainable Energy Association, this program provides climate education to elementary students, supporting the development of informed and engaged future leaders.
Make the most of it and use this Earth Day as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of environmental stewardship and take part in initiatives that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable, and livable capital region.
