Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) is excited to announce the completion of the Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP) for the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area (JdFEA).
“I’m pleased to support the Juan de Fuca Active Transportation Network Plan, which advances community-led solutions that will help people in our region connect with each other more safely and sustainably,” said Will Greaves, Member of Parliament for Victoria, British Columbia. “In both urban centres and rural communities, improving access to active transportation is key to reducing emissions and building a healthier, more accessible region. This plan marks an important step toward a more connected future for the capital region and showcases the Government of Canada’s commitment to supporting safe, healthy, and sustainable transportation options for all Canadians.”
Active transportation includes all forms of human-propelled movement, such as walking, biking, or using scooters, and may also include horseback riding. Whether for recreation or transportation purposes, active transportation plays a key role in creating safe and accessible mobility options.
“The completion of this active transportation plan is a clear demonstration of what’s possible when all levels of government collaborate,” said Dana Lajeunesse, MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat, on behalf of Mike Farnworth, B.C. Minister of Transportation and Transit. “We’re proud to support initiatives that promote healthy, active lifestyles while also strengthening local economies and tourism. By investing in the CRD’s Active Transportation Network Plan, we’re helping bring safer, more inclusive transportation routes to communities throughout the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.”
The ATNP builds on recent and ongoing plans and projects to support improved connectivity across the region. This milestone marks a significant step toward a more accessible and sustainable transportation network for JdFEA communities.
“Thank you to all the community members who contributed to this process,” said Al Wickham, the CRD Electoral Area Director for Juan de Fuca. “Your valuable insights have helped identify and define a series of active transportation projects to enhance connections within and between communities of the JdFEA. We are excited to see the positive impact these projects will have on the overall well-being of our communities.”
The ATNP for the JdFEA was developed in partnership with Bunt & Associates Engineering Ltd. and PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Inc., with funding provided by the CRD, Province of British Columbia, and the Government of Canada through the Active Transportation Fund and Community Works (Gas Tax) Fund.
The CRD delivers regional, sub-regional and local services to 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Governed by a 24-member Board of Directors, the CRD works collaboratively with First Nations and government partners to enable sustainable growth, foster community well-being, and develop cost-effective infrastructure while continuing to provide core services to residents throughout the region.
