Victoria, BC – Fires at Hartland Landfill are increasing, largely due to improperly discarded lithium-ion batteries. Found in devices like phones, laptops, and e-bikes, these batteries are safe when used correctly but can ignite if crushed or punctured in the landfill. This poses serious risks to workers, emergency crews, and the environment.
While Hartland has strong emergency protocols and works closely with the Saanich Fire Department, prevention is best. Batteries should never go in household garbage or blue bins. Instead, drop them off for free at the Hartland Depot or use the “What Goes Where” tool at crd.ca/whatgoeswhere to find safe disposal sites.
