The Peninsula Recreation Commission (PRC) and the Capital Regional District (CRD) are excited to announce the opening of the new Centennial Park Multi Sport Box for community use on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
The new covered, open-air facility replaced the former lacrosse box in Centennial Park, built in 1971, and is designed for a variety of sports and recreational programs. It significantly increases access to year-round all-weather activities for the Saanich Peninsula community.
“The soon-to-open Centennial Park Multi Sport Box marks a major milestone for recreation on the Saanich Peninsula,” said Niall Paltiel, Chair of the Peninsula Recreation Commission. “This dynamic new facility will offer year-round opportunities for outdoor activity and community connection. From lacrosse and ball hockey to emerging sports like pickleball, we are proud to provide a space that promotes healthy, active living for residents of all ages, including youth from the W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip), BOḰEĆEN (Pauquachin), SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout), and W̱SIKEM (Tseycum) First Nations. We are excited to see the multi sport box come to life this fall and serve the community for years to come.”
Facility features include:
- 17,000 square feet of new acrylic-coated play surface to enhance visual accessibility
- Dasher boards with chain-link fencing above
- Team benches and penalty box
- Scoreboard and shot clocks
- Lighting in covered areas
The multi sport box will feature programs and community activities delivered by Panorama Recreation, and can be booked for sports including lacrosse, ball hockey, soccer, pickleball, as well as general drills and dryland training. Centennial Park also features a field house and three picnic shelters, all operated by the PRC, and available to book online at panoramarecreation.ca/locations-hours/centennial-park.
The $4.9 million project was made possible through a $2 million grant the District of Central Saanich secured from the Federal Government Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, with the remaining $2.9 million contributed through the PRC’s Capital Plan, part of the CRD’s Financial Plan.
This project aligns with the Panorama Recreation’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan which is included in the CRD’s 2023-2027 CRD Financial Plan.
A grand opening celebration is planned for Spring 2026 and will feature “try-it” workshops, special guests, and official remarks.
