Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) is pleased to announce the acquisition of approximately 1.5 acres of donated oceanfront land on Salt Spring Island for community park purposes. The property, located at 215 Morningside Drive, features open viewpoints, a small beach, and direct access to the ocean and aligns with the 2019 Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan’s key strategy to “create more and enhance existing access to our lakes and the ocean.”
“We are deeply grateful for this generous donation, which will provide lasting benefits to the Salt Spring Island community,” said Earl Rook, Local Community Commission Chair for Salt Spring Island. “This oceanfront property offers a rare opportunity to protect shoreline access and natural beauty for generations to come.”
A covenant will be registered on the property title to ensure its available for community park purposes.
The property was donated by the family of Ruth Baldwin, who passed away in 2009. They stated, "Ruth loved the property and would be thrilled to see it being used as a community park for all to enjoy.”
This donation represents a meaningful contribution to the long-term vision for parks and recreation on Salt Spring Island. With its protected status and natural features, the property will remain a publicly accessible space that supports shoreline access and environmental preservation.
The CRD provides locally funded community parks, arts, and recreation & cultural services for residents and visitors within the electoral area of Salt Spring Island. These services are administered by the Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission (LCC) on behalf of the CRD.
