Victoria, BC– Emergency Services on Galiano Island are being enhanced with the merging of the North and South Galiano Volunteer Fire Departments into the newly established Galiano Island Volunteer Fire Department (GIVFD). For decades, these departments have served the community independently. Following a governance review conducted in 2024 by the Capital Regional District (CRD), both departments recognized the benefits of consolidation.
“This merger strengthens our fire services by fostering a more coordinated and efficient approach to emergency response. It enhances firefighter safety, ensures better resource allocation, and streamlines operations across the island,” said Paul Brent, Electoral Area Director for the Southern Gulf Islands and Chair of the Electoral Areas Committee. “I commend the dedication of our volunteers and the leadership that brought this vision to life, ensuring Galiano Island is well-prepared to meet both present and future challenges.”
The decision to unify the departments addresses longstanding challenges in managing fire services on Galiano Island. By formalizing the longstanding cooperation between the North and South departments, the GIVFD is positioned to deliver a more resilient and cohesive emergency response.
"This merger represents a significant milestone for our island's emergency services. By uniting our two departments, we are strengthening our ability to protect and serve the Galiano community more effectively," said Karen Harris, Fire Chief, North Galiano Volunteer Fire Department.
Unified operations will also allow for enhanced training programs and improved resource allocation, ultimately contributing to greater firefighter safety and more effective emergency services.
"Consolidating our fire departments represents a strategic step forward for our island's emergency services. By combining our resources, training, and expertise, we will provide more robust and efficient fire protection for every resident of Galiano Island," said Scott Sugden, Fire Chief, South Galiano Volunteer Fire Department.
All existing fire stations will continue to operate and will be staffed by current personnel, ensuring continuity of service. The transition to the unified department is expected to be completed in January 2026. Updates will be provided on the department’s website at GVFD.ca.
