Welcome to Local Government Awareness Week! This year, we're shining a spotlight on the infrastructure that supports our region. A recent survey revealed that while most residents have a basic understanding of what we do at the Capital Regional District (CRD), residents want to learn more about what the services we offer. To help bridge that gap, we're excited to share some fascinating "Did you know?" facts about the infrastructure that makes our region thrive. And learn more about our Regional Resident Experience survey [PDF/11.7MB].
We hope these insights help you appreciate the vital infrastructure that supports our community.
Happy Local Government Awareness Week!

The CRD is responsible for maintaining 100 km of trails across southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
The newest addition to our trail system is the Mayne Island Regional Trail, a 2.3 km gravel trail connecting the Village Bay ferry terminal to Miners Bay village, which opened to the public in October 2024.
This year we are going to complete design work so that construction on the first Phase of the Regional Trestles Renewal, Trails Widening and Lighting Project can start in spring 2026. The trail will be widened to 6.5 meters where possible and lights will be added to improve comfort and safety for trail users. These upgrades will be to 4 km of the Galloping Goose Regional Trail between the Selkirk Trestle and Grange Road (adjacent to McKenzie Avenue) and 2 km of the Lochside Regional Trail between the Switch Bridge and McKenzie Avenue/Borden Street. This project will also include the renewal of the aging Brett, Selkirk and Swan Lake trestles.

The CRD Regional Water Supply System delivers safe and sustainable drinking water to over 430,000 residents in Greater Victoria. Our responsibilities include protecting the source, disinfecting the water, monitoring water quality, and maintaining the transmission and distribution systems.
In 2022, we developed the Regional Water Supply Master Plan, which outlines a proposed infrastructure program to enhance the water supply and transmission system. The Plan recommends 21 major projects to be implemented over the next 30 years to address population growth, climate change impacts, and evolving water treatment needs.
