The Capital Regional District (CRD) and the City of Victoria (City) are advising trail users of upcoming changes to the Galloping Goose Regional Trail detour route near Viaduct Park and Cecelia Road. The current trail closure and detour were established on June 1, 2026, for BC Hydro’s Victoria to Esquimalt Cable Replacement Project. Starting September 23, 2026, trail users will transition to a new detour route to support coordinated City sanitary sewer replacement and CRD trail widening and lighting work in Cecelia Ravine Park.
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail will remain closed between Viaduct Park and Dupplin Road, with no public access through the active construction area. The closure is expected to remain in place until Spring 2027.
We understand that this is an important transportation corridor for many users. The City and CRD are working to try to minimize this disruption. Coordinating the City and CRD work within one construction period will reduce repeated closures and limit long-term disruption in the park.
Trail users should plan additional travel time and review detour routes before their trip. Updated detour maps, closure information, and project updates are available on the Regional Trestles Renewal, Trails Widening and Lighting Project webpage. Separate detours are provided for cyclists and for people walking, wheeling, or using mobility devices. The routes have been designed for safety, and to support accessibility and comfort where possible.
What trail users need to know
- Effective September 23, 2026, use the updated detour shown on posted signs and the project detour maps.
- The closed trail section is an active construction area. Do not enter or travel around fencing and barriers.
- Cyclists and people walking or wheeling may be directed to different routes. Follow the route that matches the posted symbols.
- Use caution at road crossings, intersections, and shared sections. Follow the direction of traffic control personnel.
- Allow extra travel time. Construction activity generating some noise and dust is expected near Cecelia Ravine Park.
As the trail widening and lighting project advances farther north along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, trail users can expect another detour change later this fall. Advance notice and updated route information will be provided before the change takes effect.
