What Goes Where: Your Go-To Tool for Waste Sorting

Have you ever bought something and then stared at the packaging, wondering “Where does this go?” Or used an item for years —like your mattress or TV—only to realize you have no clue how to dispose of it properly? You’re not alone. Waste sorting can be confusing at the best of times and downright frustrating at the worst. With so many materials and disposal options, it’s easy to feel unsure about what goes in your curbside bins and what needs a special trip to a depot.

To make waste sorting easier, the CRD has launched What Goes Where—an upgraded and user-friendly tool designed to help you figure out the right place for over 350 items. Whether you live in a house, condo, or apartment, this handy resource shows you how to dispose of your stuff responsibly.

What Goes Where lists more than double the items of our previous tool (myrecylopedia.ca) making it easier than ever to find the right disposal method for trickier items like batteries, clothing, electronics, and product packaging like Styrofoam or coffee cups. The tool even suggests donation facilities for reusable items before listing recycling or garbage options, helping you make more sustainable choices.

How to Use It

Getting started is simple:

  1. On your phone, tablet, or computer, visit: www.crd.ca/whatgoeswhere.
  2. Use the search bar to type in the item you want to get rid of.
  3. Click on the suggested material or hit search.
  4. You’ll see whether it belongs in your garbage, recycling, or organics bin—or if it needs to be taken to a depot or reuse store.
  5. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Suggest a new item to the CRD team directly through What Goes Where or by emailing infoline@crd.bc.ca.

Help It Grow

What Goes Where is a living, ever-evolving resource. As new products and packaging emerge, the CRD will update the tool with your help. If you have questions or notice a missing material, send your feedback through the tool or email the team.

Sorting waste properly doesn’t have to be a guessing game. What Goes Where makes disposing of your unwanted stuff easier, smarter, and greener. Learn more at www.crd.ca/whatgoeswhere.
