Capital Regional District receives wildfire resiliency grant

The Capital Regional District (CRD) has received a one-time federal grant of $345,000 to strengthen wildfire resiliency over the next 3 years. Funded through Natural Resources Canada’s Wildfire Resilient Futures Initiative (WRFI), the investment will support a range of wildfire mitigation initiatives across the capital region. To learn more about the initiative visit Wildfire Resilient Futures Initiative - Natural Resources Canada.

Wildfire risk governance is shared between municipalities, Islands Trust councils, parks and protected areas, provincial and federal agencies and First Nations . The CRD will use grant funding to increase coordination between governing bodies and combine Indigenous and Western wildfire landscape management approaches. This will involve the facilitation of workshops, place-based meetings, projects and cross-jurisdictional training, which focus on landscape level wildfire mitigation approaches.

First Nations have used fire to steward landscapes across southern Vancouver Island for thousands of years. For more information on cultural and prescribed fire visit Cultural and prescribed fire - Province of British Columbia
