Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Director Lillian Szpak, who died over the weekend.

Director Szpak was a dedicated and highly respected member of the CRD Board and Langford City Council. Throughout her time with the CRD, she brought passion, integrity, and a strong commitment to public service. Her contributions helped shape important work that continues to benefit communities across the region.

Director Szpak dedicated herself to the region through many leadership roles since 2004 including as a member of the Regional Water Supply Commission, where she served two terms as Chair, and as a Director of the CRD Board since 2022.  One of Lillian’s strongest passions at CRD was the Regional Parks Service, and over the past eighteen months she served as the Regional Parks Committee Vice-Chair.

Her leadership and steady presence reflected a deep care for community well-being, environmental stewardship, and a forward-thinking approach to regional governance and planning. Director Szpak’s passing is a significant loss for the CRD and for the region she served so passionately. She will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to work with her.

In recognition of Director Szpak’s passing and in honour of her contributions to the region, the flag at CRD headquarters will be flown at half mast.

The CRD extends its deepest condolences to Director Szpak’s family, friends, and colleagues. She will be greatly missed.
