Salt Spring Island, BC– Salt Spring Island Search and Rescue (SSI SAR) will temporarily operate from the former Ganges Fire Hall #1 following a one-year licence agreement approved by the Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission (LCC). The arrangement coincides with the transfer of the property to the Capital Regional District (CRD) through the Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation Service which is scheduled to complete in August 2026.
Under the agreement, SSI SAR are moving their operations to the former fire hall at 105 Lower Ganges Road, ensuring continuity of critical emergency response services while they continue their search for a permanent facility as their current location is no longer available beyond August. Under the arrangement, SSI SAR will assume responsibility for operating, maintenance, security and insurance-related costs.
“Salt Spring Island Search and Rescue provides an invaluable service to our community, responding whenever people need help, often in challenging circumstances,” said Earl Rook, LCC Chair. “We're pleased this agreement provides the organization with a temporary home while it continues its search for a permanent facility.”
“This agreement will give our nonprofit volunteer group of rescuers a secure building for our SAR response vehicles, technical rescue equipment and a place to hold indoor training sessions while we look for a more permanent home,” said Conrad Bowden, Salt Spring Island Search and Rescue Manager. “We thank the CRD for their willingness to support our temporary use and care of this building.”
The temporary occupancy arrangement also provides time for the LCC and CRD to undertake planning and engagement activities to determine the long-term future of the former fire hall property. The process will include technical assessments, engagement with First Nations and community consultation to explore future opportunities for the site. An independent assessment has identified significant building upgrades that would be required before the site could accommodate uses such as a community hall or public gathering space.
