    Yard-Free Composting Workshop

We welcome residents to join us for a Yard-Free Composting Workshop at the Hartland Learning Centre followed by a tour of the region's landfill.

At the workshop you will learn the options available for composting without a yard. An expert from the Compost Education Centre will answer all your questions about the best yard-free composting option for your needs, worms, bokashi, countertop electric food dehydrators, service providers, and proper use of greenbins.

On the tour you will learn how the CRD safely and responsibly manages the region's waste. We will discuss the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), ways we can generate less waste and how our behaviours affect Hartland Landfill and the region.

    Tour Highlights:

    • Active Face - see where all your garbage goes and what we do with it at the active face
    • Landfill Gas - Learn about landfill gas and how we're reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning "garbage into energy"
    • Environmental Protection - See how we manage rainfall runoff to ensure we protect our environment
    • Site Rehabilitation - Visit the closed section of the landfill where native trees and shrubs have been planted to help return the area into a natural eco-system.

    During Your Visit:

Most of the program occurs indoors or on the bus. There is a short time outside when walking up or down stairs between the learning centre and the parking lot. Washrooms with sinks and running water are available in the parking lot and inside the learning centre. If you foresee challenges with the stairs, contact us and we will arrange for accessible access to the learning centre.

    Location

Meet at the Hartland Learning Centre – 1 Hartland Avenue

Parking is available in the lot located to the right just before you enter the facility (Mt. Work mountain bike parking lot). Please walk through the gate located behind the washrooms and make your way up the stairs to the Hartland Learning Centre.
