Curved retaining wall mural with hyper-realistic and first nations style illustrations of a hawk, dragonfly, and swallow.
Description

This large curved mural responds to the gathering of community for movement and sport. Inspired by the local "animal athletes" of our world, it depicts the swallow, sharp-shinned hawk, and dragonfly, and  acknowledges the gifts of the animals where so many young human athletes find their own. The mural was also an opportunity to celebrate and create space for collaboration with the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples who have been here since time immemorial. The mural incorporates elements designed by Temoseng (Chazz Elliot) that respond to the depicted animals and the theme of movement. 

This mural was created as part of the District of Saanich's 2022 Community Canvas Mural Pilot Project.

Artist statement

Jesse Campbell: "It's important to uphold the local protocol ofour host nations. We as a people have always lived on the land of other Indigenous people. Through murals like this the intention is to create an opportunity to share space in a good way and hopefully develop more opportunities for representation.”

About the artist
Jesse Campbell and Temoseng (Chazz Elliott)

Jesse Campbell is of Michif (Métis), Salteaux, Cree, Scottish, and English ancestry and has been a professional mural artist since 2010. In addition to his mural practice, Jesse spends time mentoring youth on the craft of mural painting and understanding the diverse forms of Indigenous art across North America.

Temoseng (Chazz Elliott) descends from the WSÁNEĆ and Lekwungen Nations. While growing up in WJOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) First Nation, he began learning the ways of Coast Salish art and the WSÁNEĆ teachings. Temoseng’s artwork includes carvings, design and paintings.
