Whale People Spindle Whorl Description This carved cedar panel shows four whales circling a human face. The design is based on a traditional Coast Salish spindle whorl, a round tool used in wool spinning.
The artwork was created by Susan Point of the Musqueam Band to mark the 10th anniversary of the Victoria Conference Centre. Her design draws from generations-old Salish stories and legends about the "Whale People." In the corners, circular forms represent the four seasons and the four phases of the moon.
About the artist Dr. Susan Point, O.C., RCA is a descendant of the Musqueam. Susan's distinct style has inspired a crusade in Coast Salish art.
