M'akhotso (Mother of Peace) Description ‘M’akhotso, Mother of Peace is a cast bronze sculpture that was submitted to the District of Oak Bay's 2018 sculpture competition, under the theme "Balancing Act".
It was modeled after a woman named Mbuto, a friend of the artist's who emigrated to Canada from South Africa at 19, not knowing anyone. Her middle name, ‘M’akhotso, means "mother of peace". The sculpture represents one of the greatest balancing acts that many people experience – immigration, and perusing one’s dreams in peace.
'M’akhotso symbolizes the generations of people who have come to and been part of shaping our continent. Representing their dreams for a brighter future, she likewise embodies our shared hope of universal peace for all in the present and for those who continue to join our world.
About the artist Born and raised in California, Linda Lindsay launched into her creative journey with the encouragement of her artistic family. While studying art at university, she began sculpting the human figure and a lifelong passion was born! She taught art at both high school and college levels. In 1993 she moved to Victoria, British Columbia where she and her husband raised a family.
