Echo Chambers

Description

There are four bright murals painted on concrete silos next to Rock Bay. These murals look out over the Matullia Lands. This was industrial land, that BC Hydro returned to the Songhees and Xwsepsum Nations. The artists are Bradley Dick, Eva George, Lajah Warren, and Soarimpt.

“Echo Chambers” by Soarimpt is the southern-most (left-most in this image) of the three murals grouped together. You can see it best from the from the Matullia Lands.

Artist statement

This artwork features the Giant Pacific Octopus, a symbol of adaptation, intelligence, grace, and resourcefulness. Digital elements, including a grid overlay and low-poly egg form, reference our evolving technological environment—its innovations as well as its risks. The octopus stands as a reminder to remain vigilant and adaptive while navigating the siloed perceptions shaped by algorithmic realities.
