Topography

This artwork greets you with a map made of concrete. It shows the Burnside neighbourhood, shaped from a series of blocks. From far away, it looks like a grid of abstract forms. Up close, you might notice something surprising: each block was cast from the foot of a local resident. For six months, Tyler Hodgins collected foot molds at community events. He used them to build this map, including a baby’s foot where the community centre stands. The result is both a literal and symbolic footprint of the people who live here. The title Topography refers to the shape of land. But it also speaks to the human features that define a place. What kind of footprint would you leave on your neighbourhood?
